Magento is the most feature-rich and powerful open-source e-commerce platform available on the market, and many online store owners would benefit from having their stores on Magento instead of their old shopping carts (OsCommerce, VirtueMart, XCart etc.). One reason for this is because when a client chooses to start with a more simply hosted ecommerce solution (Shopify, Wix, Volusion etc.) they soon find out that after growing bigger, they actually need something custom and more tailored to their needs. While there are many webshops made on proprietary platforms or outdated technologies, which can be too expensive to support/modify due to lack of technology experts – Magento can be a great solution to switch to because there is a big community of coders who can always help.
We have a lot of experience with migrating existing solutions to Magento from old and new designs, and from all kinds of platforms, with any level of complexity.
Another hot topic nowadays: the upgrade from Magento 1.x to Magento 2.x. Overall, it’s not even an upgrade (despite being called an update) these two platforms are very different, especially in terms of technologies used. So, instead of an upgrade, think of it more like a migration or perhaps the “Creation of a new Magento 2 site based on old Magento site”. Magento 2 includes built-in tools to automate data migration, and for relatively simple sites it can be done very quickly and almost effortlessly, whereas for advanced Magento 1.x sites that were highly customized, we usually create a data migration script. Then, we either migrate the design and functionality or create them from scratch because there is no compatibility between both themes and extensions for those platforms.
Often people ask — should I migrate my existing site to Magento 2 or Magento 1? In a word, Magento 1.x will soon become an obsolete platform without proper support so upgrading to Magento 2 is inevitable but why wait? You know what they say, the early bird gets the worm.
Even still, if you’re unsure how to proceed contact us, we’ll evaluate your old system and migration complexity and get back to you with the cost.
